54 West Gate: Stories of Ralph Connor House spans over 140 years from 1860 to 2004.
It is a truly Canadian story about a magnificent house on the Assiniboine River in the historic neighbourhood of Armstrong Point in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Members of the University Women’s Club of Winnipeg Heritage House Conservation Committee have researched, compiled and written stories of the people who lived and worked there, bringing to life a history steeped in adventure and romance.
Best selling Ralph Connor novels financed the building of this home for Reverend Charles W. Gordon (pen name Ralph Connor), his wife Helen and their seven children.
Rev. Gordon was a social activist, Chaplain to the Canadian Forces in WW1, confidante of prime ministers and presidents and influential in the formation of the United Church of Canada.
He died in 1937 and in 1948, was posthumously granted the title of Person of National Significance by the Canadian government.
His family moved from 54 West Gate shortly after his death, and in 1939, it was saved from demolition by the University Women’s Club of Winnipeg who has cared for it ever since.
54 West Gate: Stories of Ralph Connor House offers something for everyone, especially those interested in architecture, social history, women’s issues, as well as stories of laughter mixed with a few tears about a unique corner in Canada’s heritage.
